Hardwood

Hardwood flooring installation in San Diego. Acclimated, nailed, finished right.

Solid hardwood is a 50-year floor when it's installed correctly. Most failed hardwood jobs in San Diego come down to two things: not enough acclimation time, and a subfloor that's too wet at install. We measure both before the first board goes down. Then we nail or staple to spec, hand-fit transitions, and finish with low-VOC waterborne polyurethane.

What do homeowners ask about Hardwood?

How much does hardwood flooring cost in San Diego?

Mid-grade solid white oak runs $9 to $12 per square foot installed, including acclimation, demo, subfloor prep, install, and basic transitions. Wider planks (6 inches and up), exotic species like walnut, and pre-finished European oak push pricing to $14 to $20 per square foot. We give line-item quotes — material, labor, demo, prep, transitions — so you can see where the money goes.

How long does hardwood take to acclimate in San Diego?

Five to ten days on site, in the room where it will be installed, with HVAC running at normal temperature and humidity. Coastal homes need the higher end. Skipping acclimation is the most common cause of cupping and gapping six months later. We measure board moisture content with a pin meter before install, and we will not lay a floor where the wood and subfloor differ by more than 4%.

Can I install hardwood over a concrete slab?

Solid hardwood directly over slab is not recommended in San Diego because of moisture transmission. The standard fix is to install plywood subfloor over the slab first, then nail hardwood to the plywood. The cleaner option for most slab homes is engineered hardwood, which can be glued or floated directly. We will tell you which path makes sense for your home before quoting.

White oak or red oak?

White oak is denser, more dimensionally stable, more rot-resistant, and accepts modern wire-brushed and rift-and-quartered finishes that read more current. Red oak is a little softer, has more visible grain, and costs slightly less. For coastal homes and clean modern looks, white oak is the better pick most of the time.

Do you finish the floor or use pre-finished boards?

Both. Site-finished gives you control over color, sheen, and grain treatment, and you get a tighter, smoother surface because the seams are filled before sealing. Pre-finished is faster (one to two days less) and works well in occupied homes where dust matters. We will show samples of both at the in-home consult.

Homeowners who hired us for this

Twenty-year-old oak floors that I was about to replace. They sanded, stained, and sealed them — they look brand new. Dust containment was real. Crew was on time every day. Cost a third of what replacement would have been.

Got three quotes for the same LVP. Surface Pro was the only one that probed the slab for moisture before quoting. Two other contractors would have skipped it. Floor's been down six months and there's not a single edge curling anywhere.

David K. LVP Installation · El Cajon

Coastal house, slab on grade. They explained why solid hardwood was a bad call here and walked me through engineered options. Picked European white oak, glue-down install. Looks like real wood because it is real wood, but handles the humidity.
